Aspects of the life-cycle of <i>Monhystera parelegantula</i> (Nematoda; Monhysteridae) OMA

<i>Monhystera parelegantula</i> (De Coninck,1943) was collected from the sediment of the Sluice-dock, a euhaline-polyhaline lagoon near the harbour of Ostend (Belgium). The species was cultivated in large numbers on a bacto-agar medium with bacterial growth. Embryonic growth was studied at 30 °C and 30 promille S. Maximum embryonic length-growth occurs at the vermiform stage. Post-embryonic length-growth, studied at 25 °C and 30 promille S, is a linear function of time and may be expressed as l = 160.46 + 29.55(t-t<sub>o</sub>), where t<sub>o</sub> = time at the beginning of development; t and l = time (d) and length (µm). 1. For the first time, <i>Crepidula fornicata</i> was observed in Belgium on 28-9-1911; in 1959, it became an oyster pest. 2. It was first introduced into Belgium with seed oysters from Great Britain. Later on, with seed oysters from the Netherlands. 3. Probably, the geographical spreading is caused by the adult animals attached to oysters. Larval propagation is responsible for local extension. 4. In the sluice-dock at Ostend, larvae occur from the middle of May till the end of November; they swim freely for a period of about 12 days. The first massive emission of larvae is observed during May and June, a second one in September. 5. The larvae settle preferentially at a depth of 65 cm. 6. Maximum settling takes place in May. The harbour of Ostend has been surveyed on the 6th of August 1970 at low water and high water. Samples have been taken at various depths for chemical analysis, bacteriological, phytoplankton and zooplankton investigations. All the results demonstrate an obvious water stratification and a heavy pollution by sewage outfalls and inland water incomes.

Resuming our proper observations and taking in account the collected data in the literature we can conclude that: (1) diatoms and copepods are the principal components of the Oostende plankton; (2) concentration of zoo- and phytoplankton is highest in summer and autumn; (3) there is a physico-chemical and biological gradient between the front and rear of the port. The gradation is decreasing for salinity, oxygen concentration, pH, number of marine species and the total biomass. Growth on submerged substrates (fouling or "Aufwuchs") has already been the object of numerous studies especially with regard to its economic implications. The scarcity of investigations on the influence of pollution on development and evolution of the fouling-biocoenosis is surprising. The food chain of plankton at the Sluice-Dock is reduced to the simple system "producers-primary consumers". The role of zooplankton is most important only for a short time, namely in May, when it restricts the development of phytoplankton by its grazing activity, and becomes the main source of nutrients due to its excretory activity. After the disappearance of most of the zooplankton biomasses, caused by a mortality that is not due to predation, the phytoplankton can again develop. At other times of the year, the zooplankton activities such as production, grazing, excretion, and respiration only represent 1% of the total plankton activity.

Ecometabolism of a shallow marine lagoon at Ostend (Belgium): 3. The role of planktonic heterotrophic bacteria OMA

In order to assess the importance of the recycling of organic matter into nutrients in the water column, the bacterial biomass was evaluated by the spread-plate counts method, and the heterotrophic activity by two methods: initial consumption rate of oxygen and anaplerotic bicarbonate fixation. The biomass of aerobic heterotrophic bacteria does not reflect the heterotrophic activity and cannot be used as an index for this activity. This activity is always important as a recycling process for the phytoplanktonic organic matter it is depending on. Different periods can be recognized, with varying importance (relative to other recycling factors) of bacterial activity.

Nitrogen nutrients being, at least at some periods of the year, a limiting factor of primary production in the Sluice-Dock at Ostend, the production or consumption of ammonium and nitrate by the benthic bacterial communities plays an important role in the dynamics of the ecosystem. A methodology is developed to evaluate the fluxes of carbon and nitrogen associated with the microbiological activity and the physical mass transfer in the sediments. It is based on the analysis of vertical concentration profiles of pertinent substances in the sediment, completed with some direct <i>in situ</i> measurements of microbiological activity. In this work we studied some ecological factors and the floral composition of phytoplankton (micro plankton) during the 1953-1954 period. We measured successively: the temperature, the pH, the alkaline, the chlorine, the dissolved oxygen, the concentration of phosphates and nitrates. The water of the Ostend port passes the scale a-mesohaline to polyhaline. The sampling of the phytoplankton has been worked out one time or several times in a month. The Bacillariophyceae play an important role, the Dinophyceae are relatively rare, as the Chryosophyceae, and the Chlorophyceae are meeting during the whole year, with the exception of January, February and April, in little quantities, except for November. Evolution des populations de bactéries marines hétérotrophes au bassin de chasse d'Ostende (Belgique) en 1971 OMA

A bacteriological study of the water of the "Bassin de Chasse" of Ostend (Belgium) has been done from 31 March till 29 July 1971, when the dock has been kept closed. The results show a succession of different populations of heterotrophic marine bacteria. This conclusion appears from different results: <ol><li>total count of bacteria; </li><li>separate count of bacteria forming white and coloured colonies; </li><li>rough determination (morphology and Gram-reaction) of some bacteria. </li></ol>These population-variations could be explained by variations in the organic matter of the water.

Feeding of <i>Acartia tonsa</i> Dana (Copepoda, Calanoida): predation on nauplii of <i>Canuella perplexa</i> T. & A. Scott (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) in the Sluice-dock at Ostend OMA

Feeding experiments in which the zooplankton fraction of the Sluice-dock smaller than 200 µm is offered to <i>Acartia tonsa</i>, the dominant calanoid of this biotope, show that it feeds on the nauplii of <i>Canuella perplexa</i>, the dominant benthic harpacticoid. The ecological implications of this carnivorous feeding, occurring in the presence of natural phytoplankton concentrations, are briefly discussed.

Influence de quelques facteurs écologiques sur la vitesse de reproduction du cilié hypotriche <i>Euplotes vannus</i> Muller OMA

During ecological investigations on the optimum culturing conditions of ciliates, we studied the influence of a number of abiotic factors on the reproductive potential of the hypotrichous ciliate <i>Euplotes vannus</i> Muller, such as the nature and the quantity of food, the temperature and the salinity. The experiments were run in petri dishes of 5 cm diameter containing 5 ml of food suspension, and were always started with conjugants. The microphagous <i>Euplotes vannus</i> thrives on a variety of food media. Excellent results were observed on homogenized bakers yeast, i.e. 10.000-20.000 animals in 5 ml of food suspension.
